about

So it Begins - A simple little strummer that has some links to the great George Harrison Beatles song It’s All Too Much from Yellow Submarine. I wasn’t trying for that but the melody sounds similar to me upon playback.

Phantasm - This song has been around a long time. Even before there was a Phantasm 5: Ravager film, I had been singing Phantasm to friends and foe alike. For those that don’t know, Phantasm is a film series mainly about the Tall Man, a supernatural and malevolent undertaker and the main antagonist who turns the dead into dwarf zombies to do his bidding and take over the world. He is opposed by a young boy, Mike.

Tears Rolling Up Our Sleeves - I honestly put a few songwriters in a class above all others. And Bob Dylan, Ray Davies, Rober Pollard and Paul Westerberg are my Mount Rushmore. Of course it’s subjective and there are so many other great ones, but the Westerberg stuff has always been something that hits me.

Heartlight - This is a song that was inside my own heart during the Pandemic. We were all homebound and missing our friends, so this came pouring out. I don’t connect the song to E.T. which is why it’s famous, but the lyrics and crosstalk about skateboarding make it a very moving piece for the listener.

Mr Wrong (single version) - This arrangement from Producer Susie Quatro - who also plays drums here - is a treat for me as much as you the listener. Crandle with a full band! Peter Coffintale with a great bass line leaves you with a quick bit of rock. Hopefully you are humming it all year long and sharing it with your friends.

All Things Must Pass - The songs I choose to cover tend to come from real life experience. I’m not just a songwriter and performer, but also a music fan. So when the Beatles Get Back documentary was about to be released I was going back through all the songs we all love. This being the title track to George’s first solo album and an all time classic.

Laughing - My older brother has a real affinity to a period of rock/pop music that comes flooding into my memory from time to time. These aren’t songs I listen to (or even own) and I certainly don’t do the lyrics justice. But the melodies and song craft are something I strive for and is the reason I like to play them.

Christmas Morning - December 2021 Crandle got Covid. I wasn’t really sick but I couldn’t travel with my family for Christmas with the folks. Left alone with a guitar, Crandle does what he does best; come up with a tune to turn the sadness around. The final song may sound somber but it was meant to be uplifting on a holiday morning.

The Dance - I saw Garth Brooks in concert as a young and up and coming artist myself in 1993 and he made quite a lasting impression on me. His earnest delivery and ability to share with the audience is something that comes across in all his music. The Dance is a particularly great example and a very moving song. I’m sorry I didn’t take the time to learn the lyrics - really at all - but it was a spontaneous performance for a good friend's birthday who also happens to be a big Garth fan.

To the Heart of the Sun on the Back of Vulture, I’ll Go - Dan Bejar gets a lot of play for me. And the Pandemic saw a couple of bands/artists become “comfort food” for me. Destroyer, Teenage Fanclub and Bob Dylan were all on regular rotation, so it was natural to take a stab at one of his songs I love.

Hold On - Ian Thomas wrote this beautiful song and it was a moderate hit in Canada back in the day. The lyrics escape me but the melody is something quite dramatic. Some might recall the Santana cover done a few years later, but this is definitely the Ian Thomas version.

It’s Only Love - Not my favorite Beatles song by a long shot but one that was simple enough for me to play. I like the early Beatles songs with an acoustic guitar and even though John isn’t really a fan of this number, it’s a fun one to play.

Out to Eat - A bookend companion to So it Begins. Again it has that It’s All Too Much feel to the melody. Maybe a mix of America and All Too Much. Not sure. Also we did in fact go out to eat that night.
